Did you know that older top loader washing machines generally use more water and energy? This is why more modern and energy efficient designs are front loaders. A washing machine will use 400 to 1300 watts, with modern Energy Star rated models using about 500 watts.

This simple formula calculates how much energy the average energy efficient 500 watt washing machine that is used for two hours, twice a week, will use over the course of a month.

(Formula: Watts / 1000 x Hours x Days in Mont = kWh)

Example: 500 Watts / 1000 x 2 x 8 = 8kWh

An older washing machine that uses 1300 Watts will consume the following amount of energy during the same time period:

Example: 1300 Watts / 1000 x 2 x 8 = 20.8 kWh
