May 1-7 is Emergency Preparedness Week (EP Week).

EP Week is an annual event that takes place each year during the first full week of May. This national event is coordinated by Public Safety Canada, in close collaboration with the provinces and territories and partners.

This year, the theme is Plan. Prepare. Be Aware. It is meant to help Canadians take action to protect themselves and their families during emergencies.

If an emergency happens in your area, it may take emergency workers some time to reach you. Are you prepared to be without power? You should be prepared to take care of yourself and your family for a minimum of 72 hours.

Preparing the following supplies in advance can help lessen the impact of an emergency situation:

  • Water

  • Flashlights

  • Batteries, candles, and matches

  • Non-perishable food

  • Medical supplies

  • Alternative heat source

  • Battery operated radio

  • Generator

Visit www.getprepared.gc.ca for more information on how to prepare in the event of an emergency.
