Washing Machine Consumption Calculator

Wild Rose

A washing machine is a common home appliance that most people use to clean their clothes and fabrics. Older top loader washing machines generally use more water and energy, this is why more modern and energy efficient designs are front loaders. A washing machine will use 400 to 1300 watts, with modern Energy Star rated models using about 500 watts.

This simple formula calculates how much energy the average energy efficient 500 Watt washing machine that is used for two hours twice a week, will use over the course of a month.

Watts / 1000 x Hours x Days in Month= kWh

Example: 500 Watts / 1000 x 2 x 8 = 8 kWh

An older washing machine that uses 1300 Watts will consume the following amount of energy during the same time period.

Watts / 1000 x Hours x Days in Month= kWh

Example: 1300 Watts / 1000 x 2 x 8 = 20.8 kWh
