Free Light and Heat from the SUN!

Let free light and heat from the sun inside your home this winter. Making sure heat doesn’t escape from your windows is important, but that doesn’t mean you can’t take advantage of the sun heating up your home and providing free light. Open your blinds or curtains for south-facing windows on sunny winter days. In the evening, don’t forget to close them to lock in the free heat. In areas where your home doesn’t get much sun, especially in areas shaded from trees, keep your curtains and blinds closed. We rely on electrical lighting during the long, dark winter nights. To help reduce your consumption, consider installing automatic timers, motion sensors and dimmers on your lights.

Winter Energy Saving Tips

The following tips can help you reduce your overall consumption this winter. Put on a sweater and lower your thermostat to potentially save energy. In the winter, change your fan's direction to turn clockwise, drawing cooler air up and allowing warmer air to be pushed toward the floor. Put down a rug to help insulate your floors. Install a furnace filter alarm. This will let you know when it's time to change your filters. Don't forget to check your furnace filter monthly during the winter months and replace it if it's dirty. Keeping the filter properly maintained can also improve air quality. Keep air vents clear of furniture
